Postal Love: Postcards from Saudi Arabia & Spain

Ilde from Couchsurfing, sent me two postcards from his travels. He was in Bahrain when he told me that he was going to send me a postcard. I actually didn’t expect to receive two postcards from him! Thank you, Ilde! Here are the postcards that he sent me.

Pretty Saudi Arabia. It’s actually one of the places that I want to go to. Don’t you just love the pretty handwriting on the right side?

This is one unique postcard! I thought it wasn’t even a postcard. Pretty cool don’t you think? Looks like the ones that you get from books and magazines.

Christmas = Bankrutpcy?

I hope everyone enjoyed celebrating Christmas this year, be it with their friends or with their family. As for me, I spent a lot of time shopping this holiday season, as I know a lot of people did also. Since, the last time I went shopping for Christmas was years ago, I ended up buying a lot of stuff this time. The hoarder in me —that I got from my mother and my aunts, got the best of me. And these are some of the things that I bought for Christmas!

First off, the things that I bought for myself,

The Moon and The Star

According to the Internet, this deck here, Rider Waite’s Tarot Deck, is one of the most popular tarot deck. It’s also the best deck for beginners who wants to learn a little bit of fortune telling.

I did try reading my own fortune, unfortunately, it’s not looking good for my love life. Tsk tsk tsk. Kidding aside, this is a fun way to entertain your guests on a party or a cool trick to add to your skills to show off to some friends.

I also spent a LOT of time in bookstores this season. Especially in Fully Booked. I bought 10 books in total. I got 3 copies of The Time Keeper by Mitch Albom. One for myself and two that I gave away as Christmas presents. I also got:

Halo by Alexandra Adornetto,

Twilight The Graphic Novel Collector’s Edition by Stephenie Meyer,

Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas,

The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry,

The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank,

Wildflower: A Novel by Nick Bantock

and

Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy

I also did some online shopping. I hoarded bought washi tapes, deco stickers, and postcards (YEY!) from Hey Kessy and Bee Happy Crafts.

I got crazy over the stuff that Bee Happy Crafts have on their site. So much vintage and postal love! I couldn’t resist. What you see above isn’t even a quarter of what I bought.

Lastly, I bought my mom an antique (ENGLAND, Year 1990!) It was expensive, but I thought it was worth every penny.

Look how gorgeous that piece is! It’s like a mini UFO with legs! The store guy said that it’s a butter holder and it’s perfect since my mom loves breakfast.

I was also busy helping my aunt for her son’s 7th birthday. She bought a lot of glass bottles from Divisoria and ended up having more than she could use. Hoarding runs in our family, as you can see. So she gave me some of the bottles, 100 bottles in fact. _MG_0286

I’ll use these as ink bottles for mixing my dip pen inks.

Now, I need new inks…

Postal Love: Postcards from Austria, Indonesia, and Malaysia

Here are the first three postcards that I received from my fellow Couchsurfers! Oh, how I love receiving something from the mailman!

For those of you who don’t know what Couchsurfing is, it’s a community/website where many of the world’s travelers sign up to. Why? Because it’s an alternative for cheap accommodation when you’re traveling. How cheap? It’s for FREE. But many of us don’t just use Couchsurfing to get free accommodation. It’s also a great way to experience the culture of that country from the locals. I haven’t tried surfing yet, but I have hosted a lovely couple from Canada. It’s a great way to meet new awesome people!

Anway, besides getting free accommodation, Couchsurfing also has different kinds of groups. And I joined the Exchange Postcards and Pen Pals group for me to have mail swap partners. Pretty neat, right?

A postcard of Austria from Yvonne.

Postcards of Malaysia and Bali, Indonesia from Fiona and Monie.

_MG_0443bStamps, stamps, stamps. Oh, how I love thee.

Setting the postal love aside, I made my own hang tags! Whoop-dee-doo! Well, I didn’t actually made them since I used a Cricut machine to cut these out. But I reckon it still counts that I made these, since I was the who typed the wordings using the typwriter, right? Right?

I’ll be using these for the Christmas presents that I’m going to give to my relatives this year.  Can you guess what I’m going to give them?

New toys for Christmas!

Early Christmas presents from Santa! Well, that is if you count my relatives as Santa Claus.

My cousins went to the States last month and just came back this week. I requested them to buy some calligraphy stuff there and take it back here in the Philippines. Because it’s really hard to get these kind of stuff here.

I’m based in the province of Pampanga, so it’s a hassle for me to go Manila at this time of year. If you’re not from the Philippines, there’s this thing we call the ‘Christmas Traffic’. Every November and December of the year, everybody goes outside to buy their Christmas presents for their loved ones, thus causing heavy traffic in the Metro. You couldn’t even imagine how bad the traffic is in Metro Manila during this time of the year.

Anyway, here are some of the things my cousins brought back home. Since a lot of the things that I ordered didn’t get to them in time, I had to send some of it here via Johnny Air. Hopefully it’ll arrive here in a week or two. Just in time for Christmas or New Year.

The photo above is me practicing with my calligraphy skills. Using a vintage Esterbrook 356 nib on a Rhodia Dotted Pad that I bought from Ebay (Martin2001) and Paper & Ink Arts, respectively.

Pictured above are some of the nibs that I bought. I put one of each in a quill pewter nib holder that I bought from Zalora.

I bought 40 vintage Esterbrook nibs from Martin2001 in total. Twenty 356 nibs and twenty 358 nibs. It came with a vintage nib box. AWESOME!

I’m still trying to get used to how flexible the Esterbook 356 is. Since, I started practicing calligraphy with a Leonardt/Hiro III EF nib which is a stiff nib. I’m leaning towards using the Esterbrook 358 more because it is stiffer than the 356 but is much flexible than the III EF nib. Unfortunately, the 358 doesn’t create really thick strokes compared to the 356. I am quite torn. I still must wait for the other nibs that I ordered to get here. I ordered a lot of the nibs that most of the renowned calligraphers use. Like the Hunt 99 or the Hunt Imperial 101. Hopefully, those won’t disappoint me.

_MG_0328I also bought new J. Herbin inks (Poussiére de Lune, Cacao du Brésil, Vert Empire, Rouille d’Ancre & Terre de Feu). Though these are too watery for dip pens. Anyway, I still use them. It would be a shame if I didn’t. Such pretty colors. All my J. Herbin inks. Including the ones that I bought from Zalora (Gris Nuage, Bleu Pervenche & Orange Indien).

My Clairfontaine and Rhodia pads and notebooks. So disappointed with the Clairefontaines. I even bought two large pads!

WWW: Welcome to the World of Wonder or also known as the World Wide Web

Moon and Stars meets WWW.

I’ve decided to make a blog about my love for anything postal (postcards, snail mail letters, stamps, mail art, etc.) or vintage stuff. You see, I’ve started collecting postal stuff just this year. I’ve received and sent dozens of postcards, mail art letters, and snail mail letters from people around the globe. And I though it would be a waste not to share my collection, hence this blog.

So, be prepared with image heavy blog posts. I’ll also blog about my adventure with the so-called ‘The Lost Art of Calligraphy’.

Let’s get this on and spread the ‘magic’ that is postal love!

Here's another hobby of mine, 3D puzzles. I have so much time I don't know what to do with it!
